Riding The Rails

When: Monday, March 28
I have always had a love for the 1940's, 1950's, and 1960's style. I guess I could add the 1920's and 1930's in there as well, since I started watching Boardwalk Empire and several different gangster type movies recently. I don't know about you, but I think there is something about those periods of time when suits, dresses, and hats were a main staple item that just oozes class to me.
I also think it is so amazing, when I look back over the history of fashion, the voice that style took in delivering a message about the times that people were living in. I know I have been thinking about this a lot lately since chopping all of my hair off. I keep flashing back to different points in history when your hair cut stated something about you not only as a person but, as a political message other then just a personal style choice for the moment. I can definitely say that FBFF's feminist post questions from last week had me really analyzing my own style choices and my perception of myself within the feminism movement.

That is where this outfit choice bloomed. I wanted to say that just because I cut my hair I AM STILL A WOMAN. No, I don't think that I needed to wear a dress to prove that point but when I purchased the dress I kept thinking of Rosie the Riveter and my grandmother who went to work to support her family because she had to. I started thinking about the other women throughout history who broke up the norms of life to do what they needed to do to help out their families and along the way discovered that they could be independent women who could be successful on their own. I find these women to be inspiring and so I wanted to honor a time gone by with this polka dot dress. I have seen old family pictures of lovely ladies wearing similar dresses as they went about their day taking care of the things we all take care of but with a style and grace that I sometimes struggle with as I lay around in sweats:)
So here is to all the hard working ladies who helped paved the way for all of us to become whoever we want to become and for all of us to wear whatever we want to wear. I say thank you!

Enjoy!

XOXO,

J

  1. Hi! I found you through today's Color Brigade post. I really love the black and white with red! You created a great outfit. Hope you don't mind if I steal that color scheme in the future. ;)

  2. May I just say how much I love those shoes on you! The outfit is rad, but your location is even more interesting! Seriously, how/where do you find these places?

  3. Pheobe,

Actually, I have been driving by this spot for 10 years and never really looked at it before. Since starting to blog I have entirely new way of looking at things. Suddenly you notice all of these amazing spots that you never even realized were there. I HATE taking pictures in front of people so I try to find spots where there aren't going to be a lot of people but that are still safe. I have had some weirdo guys approach me before and that is scary.

Thanks for always taking the time to comment! I read your blog through google reader everyday but need to comment more. My 3 and 4 year old consume a lot of my attention during the times I am reading though reader. I wish I could have just another 2 hours a day to do what I love and that is read and respond.

    Sincerely and with thanks!

Welcome and thank you so much for taking the time to check out my blog. I am going to head on over and take a look at your's as well. I love Color Brigade. It has really helped me to take a better look at my outfits. I tend to just wear a lot of black but that is changing.

  6. Mulika,

Thanks so much for stopping by. Modcloth.com is where I purchased it. If you come up with a harder edge version of this look let me know. I would love to see that! I tend to have a rocker attitude most days. This look actually, as well as a couple of other posts recently, are a lot more girlie than I usually am.

    Sincerely,

    Julie

I headed on over to your blog. I love your hair! So cute! I think mine fits me a lot more than it did before. Thanks so much for checking out my blog and taking the time to comment. I LOVE how your wore the scarf as a belt in your post from Tuesday. How did you tie it to look so amazing? I have a bunch of scarfs and would like to try out your belt idea.

    Sincerely and with thanks,
